Cheap, Healthy Summer Treats
Jul 15, 2010
One of the best investments I ever made was buying a popsicle mold. It cost me all of $1 at the Dollar Tree, but I use it over and over and over again each summer. It's super easy to use and makes frugal and healthy treats for the entire family.
A lot of blogs and websites recommend actual recipes for making popsicles, but this is not at all necessary. When I was a kid, my mom just poured juice into the mold; nowadays, watered down juice might be in order. Or, do as I do: Use yogurt.
Contrary to some sources, you don't need to do anything to the yogurt to get it to freeze well. Just pour it into the mold. I use full-fat YoBaby yogurt because my oldest is borderline underweight, but you could just as easily use low-fat yogurt. If you want to put slightly more time into popsicle-making, you can make homemade smoothies, pour them into the mold, and freeze them. Trust me; your kids are gonna love these treats!
