Counteracting "God-as-a-Genie"

In order to help my children get over the "God-as-genie" syndrome (i.e., "God, please send me a pony."), we've developed the habit of prayer time for others. In the morning, as soon as some calmness enters the household after the flurry of getting Daddy off to work, we sit at the kitchen table and pray for others.

I begin by praying for Daddy, then anyone else who's in need. Then I let my 5 year old pray, too. Sometimes my kindergartener comes up with the sweetest and most thoughtful prayers - things I might never think of. And starting our day off thinking of others? It's a very good thing.
